Wear It Purple Day is about creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public spaces to show LGBTIQ+ young people that they are seen and supported. So dust off your best purple outfit and show you care.

The 2020 theme is We Are The Change and envisions the importance of encouragement, empowerment and emphasis on making effective change for LGBTIQ+ young people and all minority groups.

In the coming weeks Lifeline Darling Downs will be launching a new specialised LGBTIQA+ Domestic and Family Violence program in Toowoomba. The Safe Connections program will provide support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning asexual and other terms (LGBTIQA+) survivors of Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) and their families through a case management framework using client-centred planning to address individual client needs and goals. Practitioners will work in collaboration with clients to develop individual support plans incorporating strength and resiliency-based principles.

Research demonstrates that one in three LGBTIQA+ people experience violence from a partner, ex-partner or family member meaning that LGBTIQA+ people are just as likely as people in the general population to experience DFV. However, research also indicates that LGBTIQA+ people are often less likely to report domestic and family violence or to find support services that meet their specific needs. That is why this new program is so important for the LGBTIQA+ community.

So, keep an eye out for more details on this very special program. In the meantime, if you would like further information please contact Darren Tomlinson, Lifeline Darling Downs on 1300 991 443.
